Suntouched/Sandline Gold Series

ACT 1 - 12/13 May Paignton SC (single - hander Open)

6 D-Ones travelled to the English Riviera to join the Asymmetric Fleet at the Paington Single Handed Regatta on the weekend of the 12/13th May. This was the first Event in the Suntouched/Sandiline GOLD Series of 2012. The weather gods played ball and we were greeted by a decent Southerly breeze and bright blue skies; Torbay at its best.

Race 1 started on time with Charlie Cumbley efficiently making his way to the top mark first followed by Nick Simmons and close behind Charlie Chandler. With a big wind shift the run turned into fetch and became a game of who could hike the hardest to lay the bottom mark. With the wind settling in its shifted position one more lap took place before the RO shortened with Charlie talking first, Nick 2nd and Tim Garvin 3rd.

With a slightly softening breeze race 2 started with an adjusted true course. Simmons found some good speed in the lighter conditions to round just in front of Cumbley followed by Chandler. Simmons and Cumbley pulled clear of the fleet with Simmons holding the lead and Chandler taking 3rd.

By the start of the final race on Saturday the breeze had dropped off to a slight 5 kts. Cumbley, Chandler and Simmons all spotted that the pin end was biased and the right hand side of the course was the place to be. Cumbley got the jump on Chandler and Simmons and lead around the top mark never to be caught. Chandler sailed a great run and second beat to take 2nd and Nick 3rd.

A meal and evening's entertainment were put on at the club with the rest of the single handed fleets. Joined by the Phantom fleet, the night continued on into town where the Jäger bombs became the drink of choice. Needless to say sore heads were a plenty come the morning!

Sunday morning dawned bright, sunny and windless! With AP raised at the club some wondered if we would sail, but in ‘Garda-esk' fashion, a beautiful 15kts filled in allowing an 11am start.

Albeit with hangovers, it was champagne sailing. R4 started in a building breeze from the South. Jon Hammond fired out of the blocks on great form sailing an excellent first beat rounding the top mark just behind Charlie Cumbley with Chandler in 3rd and Tim Garvin in 4th. Cumbley and Hammond could not be caught. To no avail, Chandler went exploring the left hand side of the course in the 2nd beat allowing Simmons to pull through into 3rd with Chandler, Garvin and Hopkins completing the order.

After a long wait for the breeze to settle after R4, the final race of the day started in a beautiful building SW'ly breeze. The pin end was king again and Cumbley shot off crossing the fleet on port. Chandler was close behind with Garvin showing good pace in the breeze upwind to haul in Chandler by the top mark. Cumbley hooked into a great gust downwind to take him all the way down and pull a big lead on the others. Chandler led from the rest of the pack leaving Garvin, Simmons and Hopkins to fight it out for 3rd. With some good tight racing, the 3 rounded the final top mark with Garvin 3rd, Simmons 4th and Hopkins 5th. Tim looked like he had got it but dropped it in on the final gybe giving 3rd to Nick and 4th to Russ.

Congratulations to Charlie for taking the win overall counting only 4 points when the discard came in. New boy Nick Simmons took 2nd and Charlie Chandler 3rd. Thanks go to Paignton SC for putting on a great event and allowing us to coincide our open meeting with POSH and North Sails for providing the prizes.

Next on the calendar in the Suntouched/Sandiline Series is Thorpe Bay YC Regatta over the 16th/17th June. Charter boats are available for the UK nationals at Lymington and the Gold Cup in Alassio, Italy. For information mail info@suntouched.co.uk

UK Regatta Llangdegfedd SC Wales

The 29th April saw the Llandegffed Asymmetric open and was the start of the 2012 D-one open calendar. Whilst not qualifying as a premier event and Windguru suggesting Force 9 gusts for the Sunday 4 Hardy (read stupid) D1'ers. Took to the M4 and travelled over the bridge to sunny Wales. For those of you who do not know Llandegffed it's a picturesque reservoir in the middle of…Well nowhere! None the less the sailing is fantastic, a large lake with great race organisation and a warm Welsh Welcome.

We all set about rigging our boats in preparation for the first race, with a steady, but chilly Force 4 gusting somewhat more. The wind was blowing straight down the lake which meant a nice long W/L course, perfect for our carbon clad winged Italian stallions! Unfortunately due to the huge amount of rain we had seen in the previous week. Charlie Chandler had to bow out of the first race (who says civil servants do nothing) due to being on call and having to direct flood defences.

Race 1.

Unfortunately I had forgotten a watch so was left to counting down the final seconds in my head. Tim Garvin on the other hand nailed the line at full pace and shot off up the beat, demonstrating blistering upwind pace. Jon Hammond who initially had seemed buried called a right shift and rounded the mark seconds behind Tim. Kites were hoisted and off they shot! Russ Hopkins rounded shortly afterwards but got buried beneath one of Lasers 90's specials who consequently bore off in a gust forcing a bail out capsize. Meaning his race was over. Tim Garvin showed time in the boat was key and led from start to finish, winning line honours in the D-one and overall on handicap. Stirling work given our reduced PY of 953! Jon Hammond took a comfortable second and a wet Russ Hopkins, proving that Tim's time in the boat does pay crossed the line in a very wet third.

Race 2

The wind had lifted and swung slightly for the second start meaning in certain isolated areas of the lake it was particularly shifty. Charlie Chandler had made the start of the second after stopping Russ's home town of Tewkesbury from flooding. Jon and Russ had retired to the shore for coffee and a breather. Tim and Charlie set off in great form, showing boats of a similar Ilk how to do it upwind! And really showing off the weight range of the D-one! Charlie on the outer wings at (76kg) and Tim on the Inner (97kg) Again Tim's well practiced manoeuvre gave him line honours and a crucial second win. Charlie won the prize for the most spectacular capsize after pitch polling trying to bear off in a massive gust whilst sitting too far forward. I'm told it looked something like the 49er Medal race in Quingdo. So after Race 2 Tim was in a comfortable lead with 2 first. Jon and Charlie sharing a second each and Russ in Last place.

Race 3

True to forecast the wind had increased further Russ Hopkins showed good pace and decided tactically to run by the lee to the leeward mark. Now some may say this was cowardly, but given the fact he had not managed to complete a gybe all day without getting wet and that he is writing this report. We will put it down to superior tactical prowess… The three other D-ones all hoisted their kites and shot off in different directions. Unfortunately the wind had built further and from where I was sitting (at the back of the bus arse over the wing) carnage ensued with boats over left right and centre.
Russ led from pretty much start to finish, even managing to complete a gybe a full speed with the kite. (only to capsize by dropping the tiller extension whilst getting ready to drop)
Results 1st Russ 2nd Charlie RTD. Tim DNS. Jon

Race 4

Wind…..NOW WE ARE TALKING. The wind had built even further, showing that maybe Sundays Windguru forecast was going to be on the money (worryingly) Tim and Jon decided to call it a day leaving Just Charlie and Russ to fight it out. Russ Nailed the start and headed up the left side of the beat in to the proper pressure, Chandler taking the right side which proved the better bet. Charlie rounded the mark slightly in front with Russ chopping at his heals Kites where hoisted and to quote Russell Crowe in Gladiator…'On my mark unleash hell' Russ sailed above Charlie but did not have quite enough speed to roll giving Charlie the chance and space to gybe inside, which he nailed. Up the second beat it was close racing and really highlighted that despite his extra 19kg Russ was no quicker than the outer winged Chandler. The second downwind leg was not so close, Charlie shot off downwind and rounded the mark to finish first. Russ true to form chucked it in again, to round off day one in his new accustomed style!
Unfortunately with the wind building the race officer decided to cancel the Sundays racing, given the broken and bruised bodies and the 'purple Windguru status' it was the right call. All in all a great warm-up to the next event on the 12th and 13th May at Paignton.

D-One Volvo Cup Act 1 at Circolo Vela Erix, Lerici, Italy

Two fantastic days of sailing and fun in Lerici for the Volvo Cup D-One opening event organized by Media Vip, Devoti Sailing and Circolo Vela Erix. A well trained fleet of 16 boats from 3 countries showed big improvement after the winter training to race the complete 4-race program. Hungarian Balasz Tomai, former Laser and now Melges 24 sailor, took the event winning race 3 and the final double-point race after a hearth-breaking duel against argentinian Agustin Zabalua (RCNV, Valencia). Third was Beppe Pontremoli (Yacht Club Italiano, Genoa), first italian sailor in the fleet. SSW wind from 12 to 18 knots, with 1,5 meter waves, gave the fleet lot of fun and excitement. Next event of the Volvo Cup D-One will be in Bracciano Lake, close to Rome, on May 26-27. The 2012 D-One Gold Cup will be held in Alassio next October from the 12nd to the 14th.

D-One Harken UK British National Championships 2011

.

The first British D-One National Championships, kindly sponsored by Harken UK, took place at Queen Mary Sailing Club, near London, the 29th and 30th October.

Competitors were greeted with good winds and fantastic weather for the time of year. Forecast for Saturday was F3 to F4 gusting F5 and proved to be exactly right, giving the D-Ones a fantastic blast up and down the reservoir with some spectacular close racing.

Saturday 29th Race 1
Andy Couch, the current National Champion in the Phantom class, took an early lead, with Nick Craig, the current National Champion in several classes and World Champion in the OK class 2nd, closely followed by Tim Garvin 3rd. The gusts and shifts were huge and a lot could be lost going the wrong way downwind. It was Craig who took line honours in the end, followed by Couch 2nd and Garvin 3rd.
Andrew Streeter and David Hitchcock, both from Hayling Island SC, in 4th and 5th.

Race 2

Was an exact copy of Race 1 with the exception that Couch and Craig appeared to be learning very quickly how to make the D-One perform on all points of the course.
Lots of places were changing but again the end results were….

1st Craig, 2nd Couch, 3rd Garvin, 4th Streeter, 5th Hitchcock.

Race 3

Andrew Streeter was 1st out of the blocks at the pin end and steamed upwind as the breeze increased. At the windward mark, it was Craig 1st, finding form, and Couch 2nd only to capsize and let Streeter through to 2nd with Peter Mitchell 3rd and Hitchcock 4th, Garvin 5th. A capsize for Streeter in a vicious gust while going upwind was particularly unfortunate and put him back to 7th.  The final placings in Race three were 1st Nick Craig, 2nd Charlie Chandler, 3rd Peter Mitchell. Following a capsize; Andy Couch finished this one in 6th place.

So, overnight placings were….

1st Nick Craig
2nd Andy Couch
3rd Tim Garvin
4th David Hitchcock
5th Andrew Streeter

Sunday 30th

Sunday dawned with grey skies and lighter winds, which may have been a relief for those who had practiced their swimming skills and Saturday.

Race 4

Nick Craig showed great pace again followed by Pete Mitchell who had adjusted his mast rake to cater better for the wind conditions and stormed off to a safe 2nd.
Couch was 3rd, Hitchcock, National Champion in the K6 keelboat, now finding his form in the D-One in 4th and Garvin 5th, closely followed by Charlie Chandler 6th.

Race 5

Nick Craig, by this time, was really getting in the groove and showing us all how to do it. At the windward mark it was really close racing, Craig 1st, Couch 2nd , Hitchcock 3rd and the rest of the fleet closely behind. Going for clear air, Garvin gybed off early only to lose the gust completely and sit and watch the rest of the fleet burn off to the right hand side of the course. Final positions, Craig 1st, Couch 2nd,  Hitchcock 3rd, Streeter 4th, Mitchell 5th, Chandler 6th, Garvin trailing along in 7th.

Race 6

Was the double points race with no discard allowed. Andy Couch managed a bullet from Craig 2nd, and a fantastic all round performance from Charlie Chandler to secure a 3rd from Hitchcock 4th, showing exceptional downwind speed and perfect angles. Robin Foster Taylor from Thorpe Bay finally got some serious pace on and was a respectable 5th.

After a perfect hand of 5 bullets, it was Nick Craig who took the trophy from Couch, three points behind in 2nd, Hitchcock 3rd, Chandler 4th and Garvin 5th.

A fantastic weekend was had by all competitors and thanks go to Queen Mary SC for hosting, what was a very well-run event, kindly sponsored by Harken UK, who supplied prizes for every competitor.

ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Agustin Zabalua wins open title, Riccardo Pontremoli wins the Nationals

Marina di Scarlino - A thrilling double-point final race ended in splendid fashion the Volvo Cup 2011 D-One Italian Championship held in Marina di Scarlino. A record fleet for the Italian Circuit, with 27 boats, sailed in the blue water of Tuscany Maremma the full program, with 5 races plus the final double point Medal Race. Argentinian Agustin Zabalua (Real Club Nautico de Valencia) gave an impressive show of speed in light and moderate seabreeze, dominating the first two days with a solid 1-1-1-3. When the wind grow up, in the last day with a southerly gradient wind up to 16-20 knots with nice waves, the top italian sailors took the lead showing great confidence with that conditions thanks to the long training early in the year. The Pontremoli brothers from Genoa (Yacht Club Italiano), Paolo Rossi from Porto San Giorgio and Fabio Toccoli from Lake Garda took the lead in heavy condition with lighter Zabalua fighting hard to stay in the top three.

Entering the final race was a heart-breaking momentum: Paolo Rossi had just won race 5 with Giuseppe Pontremoli second and Riccardo Pontremoli third. Zabalua was fifth but still with a solid lead for the Open title. At that point only 1 point stands between the two brothers. Giuseppe Pontremoli and Paolo Rossi took and early lead escaping Riccardo's control. Giuseppe Pontremoli sailed extremely well taking the lead in the second beat with Paolo Rossi in second and Fabio Toccoli in third. Riccardo Pontremoli were recovering position afetr position but was still in fifth. The final run was an incredible one: in the final jibe Giuseppe capsized gaving the title to Rossi, but ten seconds later Paolo Rossi also capsized in his final jibe. Giuseppe, with a tremendous effort was able to resume sailing in just 30 seconds but Fabio Toccoli took the lead of the race flying to win it . Riccardo Pontremoli, sailing alone on the right side of the course, could overlap the brother by only 5 boats lenght. A perfect final jibe on a big wave gave to Riccardo the Italian Championship and a big smile. Giuseppe was fourth after Rossi in the final race and Zabalua sixth.

The first master was Andrea Magni, sixth overall. The winner of the 9,5 rig was Maurizio Bini and Paola Gervasio the first woman. Club Nautico and Marina di Scarlino made their bid to host the 2012 D-One Gold Cup.

D-ONES IN GERMANY
Six sailors from Bavaria, Berlin and Lower Saxony met to compete. Four races were held on the first day in light wind conditions. A long distance race was held at 3 Bft. on the second day. Experiences were exchanged over beer and pork on a stick with a live music band in the evening. Sailors of other boat classe showed a keen interest in the D-One especially after long distance race in which the D-One class was the last one to start but finished the fastest class to complete the cource. After the cake buffer and the awards ceremony all went home happy.

CZECH INTERNATIONAL D-ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Another great D-One event was held on weekend 2/4 September. The Czech International D-One Championship took place in YC Mulda at sunny Lake Lipno, the largest Czech lake, located in southern Bohemia. Competitors from Austria, Germany, Hungary and England joined Czech sailors on Thursday for real test sailing in perfect windy conditions. In the end twenty D-One sailors from seven countries completed three races on Friday in medium/strong wind and two races on Sunday in light wind. Due to the absence of any wind on Saturday we all enjoyed an evening party. The Championship was marked by a friendly atmosphere, good facilities at the yachting club and very helpful club staff, so much so that we decide to return there next year!

TOM SLINGSBY DOMINATES THE 2011 D-ONE GOLD CUP IN RIVA DEL GARDA

Tom Slingsby, world Laser champion from Australia, wins Sunday's double-point medal race with a formidable lead and claims overallvictory in the second edition of the D-One Gold Cup in Fraglia Vela Riva del Garda. Second and third places go to two British skippers, Nick Thompson and Giles Scott, respectively. Andrea Casale finishes fourth overall and first among the Italian sailors while Fabbio Toccoli, ninth overall, is the best non-professional skipper.

Riva del Garda, July 31st: Tom Slingsby turned the closing race of the 2011 D-One Gold Cup into his own personal parade on the waters off Fraglia Vela Riva del Garda. Going into the medal race that carried double points with no possibility of being discarded the overall score table was still wide open and a few duels were expected within the fleet for the individual podium spots. The first attempt at running a race was short lived and had to be canceled towards the end of the first run when the early-morning northerly (Peler) died down. The intense duel between Thompson and Glinsby would have to be repeated. After a half-an-hour wait, the “Ora” (the southerly breeze on Lake Garda) kicked in earlier than expected and gave the race committee the opportunity to give a second start at 11am.

That race proved to be a non-event, even with a light breeze between 6 and 8 knots. The Australian had a conservative start but thanks to his boat speed and excellent helming, he managed to build a lead of more than 100 meters at the first weather mark over second-placed Giles Scott. Slingsby then extended the lead to over 200 meters at the finish line. A finish in ninth place for Andrea Casale meant Scott was victorious in his duel third podium spot as the Italian finished ninth in the medal race. Argentina's Agustín Zabalua, winner of the 2010 Gold Cup, scored an excellent third place and finished eleventh overall.

As a result, Tom Slingsby wins the second edition of the D-One Gold Cup and proves that the dinghy designed by Luca Devoti, when helmed by Olympic champions, can reach excellent speed and provide an impressive show on water. It is important pointing out that the top five skippers in the overall leaderboard weighed between 80kg and 98kg in a windy venue like Riva del Garda, a very wide range for dinghies.

Slingsby dominates the leaderboard with 8 points (3-1-1-2-1-1-1), followed by Thompson (1-2-2-1-2-2-4) and Scott (2-4-4-3-5-5-2). Andrea Casale wraps up the Gold cup with a brilliant fourth place (4-3-3-4-3-4-9), showing that he still has all it takes to be competitive on a dinghy. Giorgio Poggi is eighth while Fabio Toccoli, with a ninth place is also the winner in the Corinthian division. Riccardo Pontremoli from Genoa closes the top ten. Nathalie Testa wins the title in the women's division while German Eberhard Bieberitz is the best-performing Master.

“It's been a real pleasure racing on the D-One here,” stated a clearly jubilant Tom Slingsby (three-time world Laser champion). “It's a great boat, great people and great class. Having 36 yachts from 11 nations in the second edition of the D-One Gold Cup is a good result. I decided to come here and race because I was definitively intrigued by the potential of this dinghy. The D-One can have a great future and grow very fast. I will certainly train again and race on a D-One, this time bringing many of my friends, to whom I definitely suggest they tried it.”

AGUSTIN ZABALUA DOMINATES IN VOLVO CUP D-ONE IN CATTOLICA

Cattolica, 12 June 2011: The Volvo Cup D-One continues under the clear domination of Agustín Zabalua. The Argentinean skipper, winner of the first Gold Cup edition in Valencia, scored yet another two bullets on Sunday, after Saturday’s first place. This triple bullet performance put Zabalua comfortably in command of the overall score table of this great event, hosted by the Yacht Club Marina of Cattolica. Second and third places went to Italians Alessandro Novi (2,5,2) and Paolo Rossi (3,3,5). Andrea Magni (9,4,3 and winner in the Masters division) and Nicolò Saidelli (10,6,6), with an excellent performance in Sunday’s two races, close the top five spots. Sunday’s two races were held under a gentle northerly breeze between 6 and 9 knots. On Saturday only one race took place, again with a northerly that started at 10 knots and gradually slowed to 5 knots.

Among the 21 skippers, no less than 5 raced with the smaller 9.5m rig specifically destined for lightweights. Nathalie Testa, from Albenga, was victorious in Cattolica as well, finishing ahead of Francesca Cinque, from Rome, and Valentina Venturi.

The overall level of the fleet is constantly growing, in view of the Gold Cup, scheduled to take place from the 28th to the 31st of July in Riva del Garda. "There will be many Finn Olympic sailors," said Agustin Zabalua,"Andrea Casale, Giorgio Poggi and many non-Italians.The level will be high and conditions demanding, with the usual summer breeze of Garda that tops 20 knots. We will have to prepare well to take advantage of our chances. The level of the class is constantly growing.”

Nicollò Saidelli from Genoa, fifth overall in Cattolica, said: "In the D-One class it’s the friendly ambiance and fun that matter most.We have lots of fun, still, with a technical boat that requires training and sharp skills to set up.We like that the class is so, we are all friends and we enjoy it very much.”

The Volvo Cup D-One, after its three initial stages in Alassio, Bracciano and Cattolica will now move to Riva del Garda (27-29 July), then at the Marina di Scarlino for the Italian National Championship (16-18 September) and finally the Barcolina of Trieste (1-2 October).

ALBERTO FERRARI WINS THE  VOLVO CUP D-ONE IN BRACCIANO

Just one single race was disputed due to the unfavorable weather conditions at Sailing Team in Bracciano, Italy. A total of 26 sailors raced, including three women with the smaller 9.5 rig. The next leg of the Volvo Cup D-One will be in Cattolica in June 11-12, followed by the most anticipated event, the Gold Cup in Riva del Garda at the end of July.

The second leg of the Volvo Cup D-One, organized by Sailing Team Bracciano, ended with just one valid race that took place on Saturday with a westerly wind of 10 knots. On Sunday,  the breeze did not come to the lake on the outskirts of Rome and at around 4:30pm the last slim hopes of having a race faded away under the storm. This event, with only a single valid race, will therefore not count towards the 2011 Volvo Cup. What remains valid however is the important victory by local skipper Alberto Ferrari, ahead of Argentina's Agustin Zabalua, reigning Gold Cup D-One champion, and Alessandro Novi from Genova.

The race within the race of the five yachts equipped with the smaller 9.5 rigs was particularly hard fought and fun thanks to the balance between light weights, wings. Among them there were three brave and beautiful girls, with with Nathalie Testa finishing ahead of Francesca Venturi and Valentina Cinque. In the Masters division victory went to Giovanni Tricarico, followed by Andrea Magni and Guido Falciola. The Immersion watch for the fastest skipper to the first windward mark (Immersion Speed Contest) went to the Roman Stefano Caruso.

What were not absent from the event was the fun, thanks to the D-One spirit, and the opportunity for the skippers to deepen their knowledge with this innovative dinghy with mainsail and spinnaker, thanks to Luca Devoti and Agustin Zabalua, who imparted valuable advice to competitors, especially for the development of the new North mainsails.

This is how the winner of the race, Alberto Ferrari, described it: “Zabalua and I had an amazing duel and I eventually managed to stay ahead. Imagine, I hit the starting line at the last possible second… I was also lucky to find myself immediately on the right side. Now, together with the large D-One fleet in Rome, we will train hard for the Gold Cup in Riva del Garda, where conditions are very demanding but definitely very exciting.”

The Volvo Cup D-One, after the onset of Alassio and Bracciano, will proceed to Cattolica (10-12 June), Riva del Garda (27-29 July), Marina di Scarlino in conjunction with the Italian National Championship (16-18 September) and the Barcolina of Trieste (1-2 October).

THE VOLVO CUP D-ONE COMES TO BRACCIANO

After Alassio it’s the turn of Bracciano Sailing Team to be the host of the second leg of the 2011 Volvo Cup D-One. Next Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, thirty sailors will gather on the green banks of the Bracciano lake on the outskirts of Rome, to battle it out in the usual four races (the last one carrying double points) that count towards the classification of the leg.

Among the 30-strong fleet there are six yachts sporting the smaller rig of 9.5 square meters, particularly suitable for lighter sailors and women. Indeed, among them there are four women skippers, including Natalie Testa from Liguria and Francesca Cinque from Rome. The reduced rig, in fact, allows sailors weighing just 60 kg to be competitive. The typical weather conditions of Lake Bracciano, with a thermal breeze of 10-14 knots in the afternoon, will highlight the performance of these single-handed dinghies with wings, mainsail and spinnaker whose philosophy is precisely based on being a fun boat to sail.

This is how Nathalie Testa describes the wait until the next regatta: “After the first regatta in Alassio where I was the only woman in the race, in Bracciano I will have the opportunity to measure myself on equal terms against other women. Surely we will have a lot of fun because the spirit of the D-One is the right one both on the water and ashore.”

Argentina’s Agustin Zabalua, winner of the D-One Gold Cup 2010, will be challenged by the large Roman fleet, with Alberto Ferrari being the most prominent skipper. Riccardo Pontremoli from Genoa will also be one of the contestants to take into account, especially after his good performance in Alassio.

The Volvo Cup D-One, after the onset of Alassio and Bracciano (20-22 May), will proceed to Cattolica (10-12 June), Riva del Garda (27-29 July), Marina di Scarlino in conjunction with the National Championship (16-18 September) and the Barcolina of Trieste (1-2 October).

INTERNATIONAL REGATTA OF THE CZECH D-ONE CHAMPIONSHIP

The International regatta of the Czech D-One Championship was held in Yacht YC Dyje Breclav on Nove Mlyny Lake from 6th to 8th May 2011.

Mike Maier claimed victory in the regatta ahead of last year's Czech champion Marek Bachtik and Eberhard Miberitz from Germany.

We look forward to meeting you all at the next Czech D-One event, to be held again on Nove Mlyny Lake in the last weekend of May.

JONATHAN LOBERT WINS VOLVO CUP D-ONE IN ALASSIO

A spectacular medal race concluded the first leg of the Volvo D-Cup One held at the Circolo Nautico al Mare of Alassio, whose president Rinaldo Agostini demonstrated again his consistent efficiency. It took a while for the breeze to build up and the race committee had to wait until 1pm to give the race start with a southerly breeze of 6-9 knots. The 18 D-One’s hit the starting line for their third race of the event and Argentina’s Agustin Zabalua, winner of the 2010 Gold Cup in Valencia, prevailed until the finish, crossing the line ahead of French Jonathan Lobert and Italian and Andrea Magni.

At that point, going into the fourth and final race that carried double points and was not discarded, three sailors had a chance at clinching overall victory: Zabalua and Lobert, tied with 3 points and Italian Finn sailor Giorgio Poggi (helmsman of Fiamme Gialle) with 4. That meant that whoever won the medal race would have also claimed the event. Luca Devoti, designer of this innovative dinghy, was closely following the races, giving valuable advice to all competitors.

As the breeze dropped the Race Committee rightly decided to move in mid-afternoon to an area where the wind was free from the influences of the coastline. As a result, the 18-strong fleet was able to start its fourth race with a steady southeasterly breeze of 10-11 knots. As expected, a fierce battle ensued in the first beat between the two Finn sailors Jonathan Lobert and Giorgio Poggi. They rounded the first weather mark very close to each other and at the start of the run, Poggi decided to gybe first while Lobert saw better breeze on the left side of the course and went for it.

The French proved to be right and at the first crossing he was ahead of the Italian. There was very little Poggi could do as Lobert sailed ahead to claim the fourth race, ahead of of Poggi and Zabalua, and the first event of this season’s Volvo Cup. Riccardo Pontremoli from Genoa scored an excellent fourth place while fifth place went to Alberto Ferrari from Rome. Nathalie Testa’s good performance today was noteworthy, being the only woman sailor in the event and sailing with the reduced rig of 9.5 square meters.

“I came to Alassio to have fun, taking a break between my Olympic commitments in the Finn class in Palma and Hyères,” said Jonathan Lobert, “and I must say that the D-One is great fun and allows you to sail having fun but at the same time with a good level. The level of this regatta was excellent and the battle with Zabalua and Poggi was truly passionate.”

“This is my second regatta in D-One,” said Giorgio Poggi, “and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to racing in late July at the Gold Cup in Riva del Garda.” The final ranking is available on www.cnamalassio.it

The season’s fourth and most important event is the D – One Gold Cup, to be held in Riva del Garda (28-31 July). After Alassio, the Volvo Cup D-One, will proceed to Bracciano (20-22 May), Cattolica (10-12 June), Marina di Scarlino in conjunction with the Italian Championship (16-18 September) and Barcolina Trieste (1-2 October).

Valencia, Spain October 3nd 2010- Argentinean Augustin Zabalua is the first Champion of the Magic Marine BetPro D-One Gold Cup that wrapped up with a nail-biting race in Valencia on Sunday. The fifth race was held with a 6 to 8 knot thermal breeze from the southeast and Zabalua cut the finishing line first, thereby scoring his third victory. ItalianAndrea Gancia was second over the line and the Hungarian Olympic Laser sailor Zsombor Berecz came in third. Zabalua was in the lead with a 4-point margin on the Hungarian and 6 on Croatian Ivan Gaspic. Nothing was yet decided though. There still was time to fire the gun for the sixth and final race that carried double points and could still shape the final scoreboard. The fleet cut the starting line with a six-knot breeze from 115 that slowly died down to nothing at all while competitors were working their way up the second beat. The excellent Real Club Nautico de Valencia Race Committee rightfully decided to abandon the race and sailors returned to shore where an enormous and delicious paella was awaiting them.
Agustin Zabalua won with the excellent results 4-2-1-1-1, with a 4-point lead on HungarianZsombor Berecz (1-6-2-3-3) and a 6-point margin on Croatian Ivan Gaspic (3-1-5-2-8), first among the six Olympic Finn athletes who took part in the Championship. British Ed Wright, who recently won the Finn Gold Cup, finished fourth overall (6-3-6-4-12) while Alberto Ferrari, the best of the Italians, finished is fifth (2-11-7-12-5).
In commenting the Championship, Luca Devoti stated, "We had three fantastic days and I am very satisfied with the fleet's performance and with the way the event turned out. The weight equalization system proved to be a great intuition and success: all the best sailors between 72 and 95 kilos were vying for the lead. Our goal is to see the class continue to grow by working with the five national associations and collaborating with the International Class we created here in Valencia that has Philippe Rogge as its President. The Real Club Nautico de Valencia was perfect both on the water and on shore. The next edition of the Magic Marine BetPro D-One Gold Cup will take place in Riva del Garda, Italy, at the end of July 2011"
